Uninstall mplayer
To remove just mplayer package itself from Debian 7 (Wheezy) execute on terminal:
Install Debian Backports kernel automatically. Sudo apt-get install -t wheezy-backports linux-image-amd64 Which works, but is not as convenient. Once you have setup backports, open up your terminal and run the following if you are using wheezy: apt-get -t wheezy-backports install 'package' For other versions of Debian, I think you just need to put the name of your operating system version in the above code where I put 'wheezy'. The instructions say that nothing should happen, unless I explicitly ask for a backported package. Apt-get -t jessie-backports install 'package'. However I now seem to have a whole load of my system from backports, and one package has un-installed, because it depends on an exact version, of something that was updated to back-ports. Debian:/home/human# aptitude -t stretch-backports install cockpit The -t option here specifies stretch-backports as the target release. This would install a newer version of Cockpit and all its reverse dependencies from stretch-ackports instead of the older one from Debian stable release. To remove the mplayer package and any other dependant package which are no longer needed from Debian Wheezy.
